Why is tree preservation important during construction?

The construction process can impact trees negatively in the following ways:

  • Cutting, crushing or damage to the root system
  • Compacting soil in the root zone
  • Injure the trunk, major roots and crown
  • Heat damage
  • Chemical damage
  • Root collar damage

Consulting with a certified arborist at Arbor Plant Health Care can help you develop a tree conservation and preservation plan to be used during the pre-construction, construction and post construction phases.

Two of our most popular tree preservation services include root pruning and root zone aeration. Both of these techniques are done with an air spade.

What is an air spade?

The air spade is a lightweight, rugged and durable handheld tool that allows the removal to remove dirt from around trees and shrubs with minimal disturbance to the roots themselves. The Air-Spade produces a stream of supersonic air moving at Mach 2.

The way the air spade can remove the soil and not harm the tree’s roots is simple. It penetrates and dislodges most types of soil, but is harmless to non-porous objects such as plant roots, buried pipes, or cables. It has been proven to dig up to 50 percent faster than other air excavation equipment and much safer than digging by hand.

Even if you are not currently in any construction phases, air spades can also be used for:

  • quickly digging trenches without cutting neighboring roots or concrete
  • expose a tree’s root flare for Macro-Injections
  • expose a tree’s root flare of trees covered with fill dirt
  • expose a tree’s root flare of trees planted too deep
  • expose a tree’s root flare and root structure 6″ to 18″ below grade for tree base investigation

Our ISA Certified Arborists and Tree Workers can meet with you to discuss our tree preservation services offered during any of the  construction phases. Call us today!
